Rumour: Episode VII release pushed back?

Like sands through the hourglass…

In our last instalment, Kathleen Kennedy was butting heads with Bob Iger over the release date for Episode VII, with Kennedy pushing for a 2016 release while Iger flatly refusing to budge from the expected summer 2015 release. Meanwhile, StarWars.com were only listing an open-ended 2015 release.

The long-standing rumour, however, has always been that the release was being pushed back to late 2015. It makes sense both as a compromise and realistic target.

Now Dennis Barbie, the Netherlands Director of Retail and D2C (i.e. direct-to-consumer operations) at Disney, has posted the following tweet:

#StarWars,Saw today some awsome first features/plans of new StarWars 7 movie coming end 2015.#Disney studio role

Last week came this tweet:

So clearly he’s just met with Lucasfilm people and they’re stating a late 2015 release at this point. (He’s also no doubt seen plans for merchandise.) Maybe Kennedy got her way after all and managed to negotiate six more months for the schedule? This certainly does put another spin on “the saga continues” in any case…

UPDATE: Retract! Retract! Retract! The first tweet has been deleted, with Barbie instead tweeting the following:

If I were the suspicious type, I’d say Barbie said more than he should have and is now scrambling to undo the damage. But no, I’m not suspicious at all…
