R2-D2 in, Nick Gillard out?

Two pieces of Episode VII news today, one coming from the official Star Wars blog and the other coming straight from the horse’s mouth.

Firstly, R2-D2 will be in Star Wars: Episode VII. What of a certain golden protocol droid? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

The photo of J.J. Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy and R2-D2 tweeted late last week was taken at Pinewood Studios in the U.K., where Episode VII will be shot in spring 2014. Clearly, pre-production is well underway at the facility already.

The two other fellows are Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, two members of the R2-D2 Builders Club who are now working on Episode VII. It’s always great to see fans becoming part of the official Star Wars family.

Meanwhile, Nick Gillard, stunt coordinator on the prequel trilogy, had this to say on Twitter regarding his return to a galaxy far, far away…

Might we see a return to the more Japanese-style sword techniques of the original trilogy, away from the Chinese-influenced style of the prequels? That may be a long bow to draw, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
