Kotaku have put the pieces together through various job listings at EA Canada and discovered that EA have plans for “a major new next gen open world action game”. Notably, the listing also confirms that this is a Star Wars project.
In a sense, this is possibly a resurrection of the cancelled 1313 project. In February, Kotaku reported that in 2009, 1313 was planned as an open-world game:
In what will surely drive fans of great Star Wars games a bit mad, Underworld/1313 was, we’re told, originally going to be an open-world role-playing game similar to the beloved BioWare title Knights of the Old Republic but with episodic character updates delivered regularly over DLC. Story arcs would go to some dark places, touching on terrorism, the dealings of crime families and prostitution.
More details were added in a report detailing the collapse of LucasArts:
Later, when Far Cry 2 designer Clint Hocking joined LucasArts, he and a small team spent a year and a half designing their open-world game—a “wonderfully complex game driven by choice and consequence” that never quite got the resources it needed, according to one person familiar with Hocking’s project. That project was also cancelled, and Hocking left the company in mid-2012.
So we may yet get to see a game that includes all these tantalising details. It won’t tie-in directly with Episode VII—EA said publicly this week that they won’t be making a “game based on the movie”. But no doubt it’ll be made in consultation with Lucasfilm’s story group.
