Rumour: Is Lawrence Kasdan writing a Boba Fett spinoff?

We know that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are each writing spinoff/origin films in the Star Wars universe, possibly due for release in 2016 and 2018. Furthermore, there’s reason to believe that these films will form part of a new series that will culminate in an eventual Avengers/Seven Samurai-style team-up film.

But which characters will be involved and who will be writing which film? Jon Schnepp, one of the directors on the animated series Metalocalypse, had this to say on the subject:

One of [the spinoffs will be about] Boba Fett. It is. I know. I know for a fact. I will never reveal my source, but it is the one written by Lawrence Kasdan.

You can see the quote here:

Who might be Schnepp’s source? It seems a pretty big coincidence that Mark Hamill provides several voices on Metalocalypse

Anyway, Boba Fett has long been rumoured as a character getting his own spinoff, but Kasdan being attached specifically to this film is the twist. The idea does excite me: I can imagine the film being a riff on Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy, with Kasdan bringing his western cred to the table. (Kasdan co-wrote and directed both Silverado and Wyatt Earp, after all.)

The other spinoff is rumoured to be about Han Solo, so if this is all true, we can assume Simon Kinberg will be writing that one. And we may at last get to see the connection Solo and Fett had prior to The Empire Strikes Back—the possibilities are endless.

In any case, I’d expect more solid news on the first spinoff sooner rather than later. At the very least, Lucasfilm would have to be approaching potential directors and possibly working on early concept art. We’ll soon see, I suppose…
