Latino Review has a lengthy post which somehow manages to combine the verbosity of Harry Knowles with the sort of barely contained loathing for J.J. Abrams that you usually only see coming from Devin Faraci. At the bottom of the article, after no less that 1300 words reminiscing about The X-Files and labelling Abrams a “troll”, we end up with a few bit of actual Episode VII information.
Firstly, the post claims there will be a female villain who will (more likely than not) be a Sith. There have been various rumours and leaks about a dark side character featuring, so it’s not out of the question.
Secondly, the post says that there is no “New Republic”. This agrees with everything we’ve heard, as well as mentions of stormtroopers, Imperial-style sets and so forth. There’s a reason the expanded universe was obliterated—no retcon would patch up a contradiction this big. Also, consider the fact that Rebels is re-introducing the Empire to a younger generation, no doubt in part to prime them for what’s to come in Episode VII.
Thirdly, the post claims that John Boyega’s character will begin the movie with no Jedi training but will instead be drawn into the larger world of Star Wars in a similar fashion to Luke in A New Hope. Again, this agrees with what we’ve heard, though some other whisperings have indicated that Daisy Ridley’s character will also set the story in motion. But if you think about it, Leia got the ball rolling in A New Hope despite Luke having the major arc of the film, so this makes sense.
Finally, and most unexpectedly, the post claims that Boba Fett-style armour is featured. My guess is that Mandalorians are involved, especially given that the team working on Rebels specifically chose to include a Mandalorian character (Sabine) in the series. And, as Jason at Making Star Wars notes, it’s not like the Mandalorians haven’t been known to join forces with dubious characters in the past. (Imagine Max von Sydow playing an elderly cyborg Darth Maul, if you want your head to explode.)
So there you have it. What’s the picture that’s emerging? John Boyega will star in a sequel to Return of the Jedi, co-written by Lawrence Kasdan from a story by George Lucas, featuring the Empire, stormtroopers, Tatooine, Hoth, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia (Solo?), a female dark side villain and possibly Mandalorians. If this doesn’t sound like a dream come true then I don’t know what does.
