Alec Guinness to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi?

Wait, what?

The Academy Award-winning actor Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi in the original trilogy, died in 2000. But a new rumour, which is really the resurfacing of an old rumour, claims that Guinness will return as a Force ghost along with at least three other ghosts including Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin Skywalker and Yoda.

Those last three aren’t so outlandish, but Kenobi as played by Guinness seems… unlikely. Of course, it may be Ewan McGregor or even Max von Sydow playing the part. Or maybe this is where the “real actors with CGI human heads” rumour originated. Hell, if we’re wildly speculating, maybe this is a part being played by Andy Serkis using performance capture.

Early, credible rumours were that ILM did indeed try to create a CG Alec Guinness but the test was unsuccessful. Potentially they may have reworked the technology since then and pulled it off. Who knows?

(And let’s not forget the late Marlon Brando’s appearance in Superman Returns while we’re at it.)

I would take this rumour for what it is: rumour. But in my opinion it’s not as far-fetched as it seems.

Edit: Here are a couple of notable recent cases of resurrecting the dead in order to sell chocolate and booze:
