There have been some conflicting rumours regarding the overall schedule for the upcoming standalone films. The leaked Hasbro schedule listed Boba Fett for 2016, Solo for 2018 and Red Five for 2020, with episodes VIII and IX appearing in between.
Lawrence Kasdan had always been attached as the screenwriter on Boba Fett. But when Gary Whitta was announced as the screenwriter on the first standalone film (to be directed by Gareth Edwards), things looked murkier. Was Kasdan pulled off the Fett film in order to work on Episode VII?
Two interesting things happened yesterday, however: Shmoes Know reaffirmed that yes, Kasdan was writing the Boba Fett film. And then, in response, Drew McWeeny from HitFix tweeted this:
In other words, the entire slate of standalone films has been reshuffled. The Schmoes Know article speculates that we may instead see Solo in 2016. I disagree.
Boba Fett and Solo are not, in my opinion, as “standalone” as that descriptor implies. The Fett film, I believe, will lead into the Solo film. You can’t just swap them around in the schedule.
What does that leave us? Only the (presumably Rebellion-era World War II-inspired) film Red Five. And what does Edwards have to say on making the film?
Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life—join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm.
Keep in mind that this statement is from an official Lucasfilm press release, and the point is to tie the director to the Star Wars brand by saying to the fans, “He’s not an interloper—he’s one of you!” However, the intent could also be to link him specifically to the Rebellion, and it’s an odd statement to issue if he’s making a film centred on bounty hunters and crime lords.
As for Kasdan, which director will he be paired with? Notably, unlike the Edwards announcement, no writer was announced for Josh Trank’s project. I speculated at the time that Trank’s film would appear in 2017, with Episode VIII following in 2018 (due to J.J. Abrams not being willing to shoot VIII until 2017); Kasdan should be ready to write Boba Fett for a 2017 release, resuming work on it later this year.
So here’s the schedule, as I now see it:
2015: Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams and written by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams
2016: Red Five, directed by Gareth Edwards and written by Gary Whitta
2017: Boba Fett, directed by Josh Trank and written by Lawrence Kasdan
2018: Episode VIII, directed by J.J. Abrams
2019: Solo, written by Simon Kinberg
After that, it gets less clear. But to me the above all makes sense, especially with the pairing of writers to projects: Kasdan will write a noir-ish bounty hunter tale focused on Boba Fett, Kinberg will write a lighter adventure featuring Han Solo and Whitta will write a Rebellion-era war movie (possibly set between Star Wars: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, a la Heir to the Jedi).
Take all of this with a grain of salt, however.
