I once met Anthony Daniels. Besides being a very smart fellow and a real gentleman to boot, he’s also a man who won’t mince words when it comes to aspects of Star Wars that he doesn’t care for. He certainly wouldn’t gush unprompted unless he truly believed what he was saying.
So when he posts this…
…you’d better take notice.
Rumours are flying thick and fast for Episode VII regarding plot details—some are vague, many are contradictory. But one thing is certain: this will be a complex, dramatic story. As with The Empire Strikes Back, the audience will be dazzled by a sense of awe and wonder, but the characters themselves may struggle with difficult realisations. There will be moments to delight us, but also moments that possibly challenge us.
That’s what made The Empire Strikes Back such an incredible film: it subverted expectations by not simply being More Star Wars. Luke faced his demons; Han faced his mortality. Characters were betrayed, and there was a palpable sense of danger right from the outset. This was a real world with real consequences. Episode VII seems to be following that template.
Obviously Daniels can’t know how good the film will be until he sees it in its finished form, just like the rest of us. But he’s also one of the few people who has knowledge of the story and the performances being captured on film.
I have a feeling we’re in for greatness…
