A look back at the Return of the Jedi teaser campaign

In August 1982, the original Star Wars was re-released across the U.S., and a special treat was attached: a teaser for the third and final film in the initial, middle trilogy: “Revenge of the Jedi”. This was only three months after principal photography had wrapped and nine months prior to the film’s release.

Note Luke’s blue lightsaber in the teaser, as well as Obi-Wan’s appearance minus any “ghost” effect.

In November, The Empire Strikes Back was re-released; accompanying it was a second teaser for “Revenge of the Jedi”:

It wasn’t until December 1982 that the title was finally changed to “Return of the Jedi”. In response, the original “Revenge” teaser was re-released with the new title included:

Finally, 32 years later, fans are awaiting the first teaser to the next installment (chronologically-speaking), The Force Awakens. With mere hours to go, the wait is (finally!) almost over…
