The Force Awakens character names revealed!

Entertainment Weekly have just posted a series of mock Topps trading cards for The Force Awakens, with several of the cards revealing key character names. Here they are, in order:

If you hit the link above and read the actual article, several hints are given about the characters:

  • Poe straddles the light and the dark, a la Han Solo in Star Wars: A New Hope
  • Kylo is like Luke in Star Wars: A New Hope, only inverted
  • Neither Rey nor Finn are given surnames, as if to hide their connections to “legacy” characters
  • The middle stormtrooper is “a little short for a stormtrooper”

There were early, credible rumours that John Boyega was playing Lando Calrissian’s son. Daisy Ridley, of course, has been rumoured to be playing a Solo ever since she was cast.

Given the above hints, my guess is that Finn Calrissian has infiltrated Imperial ranks, disguised as a stormtrooper. Once on Tatooine, he learns that Rey Solo (who is possibly in hiding) is in danger, so he leaves to seek her out. Obviously this blows his cover, and he is now on the run from the Empire.

This contradicts some established rumours and speculation, however, such as Finn deserting due to a moral dilemma. So, I’m not really sure. (Edit: Given the tweet below and further reflection, as well as discussing this with friends, I’ll retract the notion that Finn is a Calrissian. I’m back to thinking he’s an Imperial defector who is the “herald” or catalyst who sets Rey off on her Hero’s Journey.)

J.J. Abrams has also said that the card numbers are significant. That’s worth pondering. Stay tuned…

Update: Sadly, the analysis in the Entertainment Weekly article was not from Lucasfilm.
