Alan Dean Foster, the man who penned (and collaborated with George Lucas on) the first potential Star Wars sequel Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, as well as ghostwriting the novelisation of the original Star Wars, is writing the novelisation of The Force Awakens!
Foster has a long history as a science fiction and fantasy author, as well as a writer of SF tie-in novels and novelisations. Besides his work for Star Wars (including the lead-in expanded universe novel for Attack of the Clones, The Approaching Storm) Foster wrote the novelisations for The Black Hole, Krull, The Last Starfighter, the original Clash of the Titans and the first three Alien movies (among others). But most tellingly, he wrote the novelisations for J.J. Abrams’ two Star Trek movies.
Throughout Celebration Anaheim, the point has been emphasised that all Star Wars media going forward form a highly integrated canon coordinated by Lucasfilm’s Story Group, so presumably this will apply to the Force Awakens novelisation as well. However, the ebook will be released day-and-date with the film, so how any last minute alterations to the film will be accounted for is anyone’s guess.
