Jason at Making Star Wars has revealed the codename for Josh Trank’s entry in the Anthology Series: “Tin Can”. (And make no mistake, Trank will be directing it.)
Here are my (rather safe) assumptions:
- It’ll be about Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon
- It’ll be set prior to Star Wars: A New Hope
- It’ll be written by Simon Kinberg
“Tin Can” implies a focus on the Falcon. The aborted series Underworld included a story thread involving Han winning the Falcon from Lando, so it’s quite likely that this story is being repurposed as an Anthology film. Indeed, it may even be combined with the Boba Fett film to create one glorious Han/Chewie/Fett adventure, though it’s really too early to say right now.
What’s obvious is that the Anthology series has to offer something different to audiences in between the saga films. Han hadn’t seen any evidence of the Force before meeting Ben Kenobi so, as with Rogue One, expect no Jedi to be present. This will most likely be a space western, just as Rogue One will be military science fiction.
The best guess for a release date is May 2018, which is really only three years away. But by that time, we’ll have seen four movies instead of the usual two.
Here’s the schedule:
- December 18, 2015: The Force Awakens
- December 16, 2016: Rogue One
- May 26, 2017: Episode VIII
- 2018: “Tin Can”
