Han Solo Anthology film to be directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord from a screenplay by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan!

The headline is maybe a mouthful, but there’s so much awesome goodness in there that it’s hard to not include it all.

  1. The rumoured Han Solo Anthology film has been confirmed, finally, with a release date of 25 May, 2018.
  2. The screenplay is written by the father/son team of Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, whose collective credits include Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens and Freaks and Geeks.
  3. The film will be directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, who previously directed The LEGO Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street.

It seems to me that Simon Kinberg and Josh Trank were set to make a Boba Fett Anthology film, and when Trank dropped out the Han Solo film was moved forward.

The creative team skews towards comedy with pathos, so I’m expecting this film to be high on lighthearted adventure, similar to the Indiana Jones films. I expect we’ll find out more at the San Diego Comic Con in a couple of days, which will feature Lawrence Kasdan on the Lucasfilm panel.

I have a very, very, very good feeling about this film, especially given the statement from Miller and Lord:

This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.

If that doesn’t win you over, nothing will.
