I tried to kick the blogging habit. I couldn’t. It is… too late for me. I accept my fate. And so here I present part one of The Countdown to The Force Awakens…
Depending on where you live, we’re about ten days out from the release of The Force Awakens. I’ll be seeing it in 12. Some of us have been waiting three years for this movie, while others have been waiting thirty-two years. Saying goodbye to Luke, Han and Leia at the end of Return of the Jedi was bittersweet at best, and there was never a clear indication that the promise of Star Wars: Episode VII would ever be fulfilled. By 1999, all hope was seemingly lost.
But now that promise is being fulfilled. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are joining a team whose work collectively spans Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Blade Runner, Gremlins, Back to the Future, The Goonies and so many other classic movies from the ’80s, including (of course) The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Star Wars is in safe hands.
And if you’re still doubtful, here’s the thing to really be excited about: buzz for this film is uniformly positive, even where expectations are high. Few people have seen the entire film, but many people have seen large chunks, and in both cases the message is clear: this film is on par with the original trilogy. As hard to believe as it is, everything indicates that we’ll be getting a very good movie at the very least.
Whether or not you enjoyed the prequels, it’s absolutely a positive if people are walking away feeling like this is a great addition to the saga. Time will tell if The Force Awakens holds up long term, but right now, it seems that this is exactly the film we’ve been waiting for.
And it’s only the biginning. Rogue One is coming in 12 months; Episode VIII is coming in 17 months and the Han Solo movie will be here in less than two-and-a-half years. If it’s all of a high quality (and, certainly, Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII should be a great film at the very least), we are about to witness a new beginning for Star Wars matched only by its peak in the late ’70s/early ’80s. Nothing can really prepare you for the scale of what’s about to come.
So, as we count down the days, remember: Star Wars will be with us… always.
