Denis Lawson, who played X-wing pilot Wedge Antilles in all three of the original Star Wars films, will not be returning for Episode VII:
When asked if the next new Denis Lawson film to be screened there would be Star Wars, he replied: “I’m not going to do that.”
Asked if it was because Disney had taken over the franchise, he replied: “They asked me but it just would have bored me.”
Despite being a fan favourite, Wedge was always a role with minimal impact on the story, being more of an Easter egg than a living, breathing character. “Oh look, it’s Wedge!” is not really the sort of part that actors fall over themselves to portray. And Lawson was never a Star Wars fan in any case.
It’s interesting that Lawson was asked to participate, however. My guess, though, is that his role would have been little more than a cameo.
